VICE PRESIDENT: JIM BREWER
SECRETARY: WANDA HIGHTOWER
TREASURER: SHARON FISHER
PAST PRESIDENT: BROOKS HANFORD
MEMBERS AT LARGE TERRY LAWRENCE & DARRELL MONROE
Attendance: Officers-Art Jordan, Jim Brewer, Sharon Fisher, Brooks Hanford and Darrell Monroe. Members: Randy Greeley & Jim Peters of Cowlitz, Glenn Schultz of Snohomish, John Kennedy of Thurston and Fred Knight of Whatcom.
President Brooks Hanford called the meeting to order at 1300 hours.
Minutes from the last meeting were approved
The executive board met at 1045 on March 18, 2000. The meeting was delayed by road construction on 1-5. Items of interest include:
1 . A report from the SARVAC Standards Review Committee indicates that we have received no requests to review the minimum volunteer standards.
2. The SARVAC web site is not working. It will be moved to the Kalama area where it can receive the benefit of technical expertise commensurate with the task.
3. The Executive Board voted to extend the deadline for 2000 dues until the next regular meeting at the Washington State SAR Conference in May.
4. Jim Brewer of Klickitat County will start work on a new PSAR message about what to do when you realize that you are lost. We will attempt to get the concurrence of WSSARCA and present it to Washington State Fish & Game officials with the recommendation that it be included in the Hunter Safety Program. Some of our members feel the current message is not appropriate for the age group to whom they are presenting the program.
5. It is the feeling of the Executive Board that there is not enough interest in the SARVAC annual awards to continue. The Board recommends that we adopt the policy of accepting nominations from member counties for recognition of outstanding SAR volunteers.
6. Vice President Art Jordan resigned to accept the responsibilities of President of SARVAC.
I. President Hanford introduced President Elect Art Jordan of Cowlitz County. Art has resigned as Vice President to accept his new duties as President of SARVAC. Art is a long time friend of SARVAC and has taken the lead role in the training and development of Cowlitz County Search & Rescue. If Art says he has a job for you, please accept it. He has many ideas and a whole new perspective on how to make SARVAC work.
2. 1 will move to fill the position of Past President on the Board of Directors.
The most dramatic aspect of this change will be that Grant "Smitty"
Smith, for the first time in over 20 years, will not be on the Executive Board
as either an officer or board member. Washington State SAR volunteers have
never had a more active or loyal representative than Smitty. His leadership
in Washington Explorer Search & Rescue, the SAR Advisory Council and now
SARVAC are legendary. His latest efforts 'involve
battling the Legislature to allow WESAR certified school children to have
approved absences for SAR missions.
3. It is only in respect for Smitty's often stated dislike for individual SAR awards that we don't do something spectacular. The best we can do now is offer a very sincere thank you for all you've done. And Smitty, if you can tear yourself away from all those lovely young Daffodil Princesses, we can always find a job for you in SARVAC.
The paid membership of SARVAC consists of the following counties:
Cowlitz, Klickitat, Skagit
Douglas, Lincoln, Snohomish
Grant, Mason, Thurston
Jefferson, Okanogan, Whatcom
Kitsap, San Juan, Whitman
We have $1598.06 in the bank
1. The By-laws committee has been retired, since they have completed the major effort of 1999. Future minor changes and house keeping needs will be handled by the Board of Directors and presented to the membership for approval.
2. The SARVAC Standards Review Committee has yet to receive a request for their services.
3. Fred Knight of Whatcom. County has accepted the chairmanship of the Training Committee. This is potentially a major undertaking and Fred may be asking some of you for assistance or information. Please give him your support.
1. It appears that there is very little SAR activity in the member counties of SARVAC this year. No major missions were reported.
1. President Art Jordan has offered to task some of his local computer guru's with bringing the SARVAC web site into the 21' century.
1. The new mailing address for SARVAC will be announced in the near future. In the mean time continue to use the PO Box One, Brinnon, WA 98320 address. We will forward all correspondence.
2. Jim Brewer of Klickitat County was elected Vice President to fill the one year un-expired term of President Art Jordan.
Adjournment: Ile meeting was adjourned at 1530 hours.
